Manuscript note in ink on verso of half-title: "This sermon was not delivered at the funeral of Dr. Mayhew -- no sermon at a funeral ever having been delivered in Boston by a congregationalist until 1783, by Mr. Clarke at Dr. Samuel Cooper's interment. At the funeral of Dr. Mayhew, Dr. Chauncy made the first prayer ever made in Boston (perhaps in New England) at a funeral -- by a congregationalist.
